| **This is a Don't: Always use labels!!!** |
The intern resumes are rolling in, getting shuffled in between show requests from Barney's buyers, fashion directors, editors and stylists. From today until February 10th, I average anywhere from 60-300 INCOMING EMAILS A DAY. (About 70 of those are from clients, sponsors and editorial/stylist requests that need to be answered asap.)
So, what do we look for when skimming (seriously, we don't read it thoroughly, only looking for fine points; school, internships, excel proficiency) ... the following:
- Proper email address (gmail, yahoo, and school/university is suffice). By proper we mean not letting us know that you are "sexygirl360@yahoo.com", but rather appropriately using "firstname.lastname@gmail.com".
- Always make your cover letter brief. No more than 2 short paragraphs, I don't need to know about how you were a little girl who dreamt of being in the fashion industry. Delete (sorry). State your strong suits and in two sentences why you would be a perfect candidate. And always include your contact info.
- It is preferred that you are currently enrolled in an accredited school. The ones who just want to "gain experience" are normally the ones that I have to confiscate their phone cameras during a show. Yes, it's that embarrassing.
- On the resume, please be sure that you are in fact stating your 'Objectives & Goals' and not a 'Summary'. Who is teaching this to you???
- Day of interview, be 5 minutes early, but not a minute late. Attire: 1) Try not to wear open toe shoes. Why? It just distracts us. 2) Clean face (no heavy makeup), manicured nails, and please lotion up those hands for the big handshake.
- During interview: Name drop editors and stylists if you can. This does mean research, but that is what an intern's job is. We want and need you to know bold face names from Vogue, Lucky, Nylon and Interview mastheads.
- Post-interview: Send a nice thank you email to the interviewer. I can only remember a handful of great candidates who have done this and I valued their internships.
Good luck! - M.J.
