Our Intern Priscilla Traveled to Haiti And This Is What She Saw...

Our intern Alex interviewed our other intern Priscilla on her recent summer volunteer trip to Haiti.

Alex:  What did it look like when you first stepped outside?
Priscilla:  It looked like any third world country, but with massive damage to the land, resources, and people. The devastating earthquake occurred about a year ago, but deeply ruined houses are still remain and there are not enough human resources to help; rivers and sidewalks are filled with trash; most people are living in tents because their houses were demolished or because of the fear that their roofs will cave in.

Alex: What were your major tasks as you were there?
Priscilla: We played and took care of the children in an orphanage, helped other Haitians on the streets and in houses, and we moved rubble from a house that had been completely destroyed.

Alex: Are there still a lot of people helping in the relief effort?
Priscilla:  There are several organizations helping the Haiti conditions, but there are never enough people to help.
Alex:  Did you focus on helping a certain group of people (i.e. women and children, etc.)?
Priscilla: We basically helped out anyone who is in need that we know of, but there was some focus on children and families.

Alex: What relief efforts have had the most lasting impact on Haiti?
Priscilla:  I think being in Haiti and actually showing Haitians that there are people out there caring and wanting to help is the most encouraging thing. Haitians hold on to the most precious thing-- hope.

Alex:  What can we do from home to help?
Priscilla:  There are many non-governmental organizations in Haiti right now, including AIM (Adventure in Missions) and there are some more here. They lack clean water, medications, shoes, people, education, employment and many more basic necessities. Contacting any organizations that is not associated with their government will probably be the fastest and best way to make a great change.
